This week we started our second math unit! All about measurement! We have been describing measurements that are over or under a whole number. We have been learning many ways of describing a measurement that falls between two whole numbers.
Some examples include: It is more than… It is less than… It is between… It is about… It is almost.... Also, we have been discussing the size of the units and how it affects how many objects are needed to determine the length: If you use different units to measure the same object, the number of units may be different, but the object is still the same length.

This week as special because we began a new reading unit-on the whole world! First graders will soar to outerspace, swim with sharks, jam with bands, play baseball with the pros, and so much more! They are so excited to discover these new places and things! We reviewed that when readers start to learn about a new topic they need to remember their "good habit" from the first unit TAKE A SNEAK PEEK! By doing that they will start to learn some information about their topic, as well as begin to generate questions they want to explore! The class got right to work looking at their books. Studying the title, the cover, the photographs, and began to learn some of the text features of non-fiction books! Take a look at them down below! Here we are as we launched our second reading unit of study in first grade! We drummed up the start of the new unit with a new anchor chart that will be a tool that we will use to fuel up the hard work they will be doing across the unit as they read nonfiction books to learn, learn, learn! It is still early as first graders, and they will be doing so much growing as readers in every text, not just nonfiction texts, so this unit balances support for nonfiction reading with the support for the reading process.
Yesterday was a very special day at Goshen Center School!!! Our local veterans came for an all-school assembly followed by a yummy turkey meal! The first graders proudly sang a small song for the Veterans. It was a very special day!
Check out the tweets! HAPPY VETERANS DAY!!! This week as small moment writers we have been paying closer attention to the conventions of writing. We have been going back into our writing folders and pulling out our finished pieces. We have been re-reading them with a "careful" eye looking at our punctuation, spacing and spelling! It has been awesome!
This week has been a very action packed week! We enjoyed our Harvest Day Celebration and having a small celebration in our classroom on Monday! On Wednesday we celebrated filling up our classroom Marble Jar with extra recess! The first graders have been working so hard making great choices and doing their personal best! They have been very motivated to fill the jar! They love hearing the loud “plunk” when they drop marbles in the jar, too!
Some examples of earning a classroom marbles have been:
