Today we said and sorted words/pictures by if they have short a or long a sound! We also learned a trick with CVC (consonant vowel consonant) and CVCe (a silent e at the end changes the middle vowel into a long vowel). Vowels can be tricky!

As you probably have heard from your child, we FILLED OUR MARBLE JAR yesterday! Our classroom marble jar is a way of promoting positive reinforcement with the class. Anytime the students use teamwork (group work, walking in the hall, transitioning throughout the classroom, working hard, getting a compliment, etc.) the students receive marbles in our classroom marble jar. We celebrated with a pajama day! We made our writing better and reviewed tools that get it ready for others to read! This morning Mrs. Lutz shared with us a special story about using our brains and hearts with our friends. We learned to think of our feelings and thoughts in our minds, a strategy we have been using a lot during writing with our "thinking jars",as well as expressing to others what we feel inside our hearts. We even role-played some situations when we feel happy, sad, mad, and excited! Thank you to everyone who was able to attend the Harvest Luncheon today. The first graders tended to GCS Garden of Life. In wellness, students learned so much by planting the seeds, taking care of the garden. This morning they harvested the kale, then read a kale chip recipe, and worked collaboratively with classmates to bake it! As you probably have heard from your child, we FILLED OUR MARBLE JAR today! Due to filling up the jar, the students have all voted on having a “Pajama Day Celebration”. WEAR your favorite pajamas (with appropriate shoes/sneakers) and bring in your special stuffed animal tomorrow ( Friday September 25th). Today first graders engaged in an interactive word wall "I spy" game! They had to listen carefully to a beginning sound of a word, a word under a certain letter that rhymed with a word given, and even ending sounds, too! Using the word wall in an interactive way helps students learn their high frequency words, as well as refer to the word wall when reading and writing! Rolling and recording during math workstations. Today we explored finding the total of two quantities up to a total of 12, counting on, and using number combinations. We also modeled action of an addition problem using counters while playing Addition BINGO on the SMARTboard! Ask us about these two math workstations games! Today students learned some ways to make their writing even better. We reviewed how to make a plan, the word wall, periods, spaces, lowercase writing, and transitional words. With partners they shared their pieces and gave each other a compliment and a suggestion! I am very excited to announce the addition of Pearson SuccessNet to our educational curriculum.
