Today we were active researchers during writers' workshop! We worked on researching an informational topic of our choice using a website you have probably been hearing a lot about at home, PebbleGo! We wrote our new learning on an organizer called a "Web".

Sounding out words one letter at a time and blending it to make a whole word!

Explicit Phonics Lessons have a sequence- consisting of 6 steps. If you scroll down you can see each step of the sequence and a fun, but sufficient way to practice reading words!

1. Develop Phonemic Awareness- A variety of phonemic awareness activities helps students make sense of the alphabetic principle and develop their phonics skills.

2. Introducing Sound/Spelling- taught in isolation.

3. Blend Words- practicing sounding out and reading words. Routines include sound-by-sound, continuous, spelling-focused, and whole word blending.

4. Building Automatic Word Recognition- activities focus on the rapid and effortless decoding and reading of words.

5. Apply to decodable text- opportunities to practice reading and rereading decodable texts that contain a high proportion of wordsa that are made up of previously taught sound/spelling correspondences.

6. Word Work for decoding and encoding- students practicing patterns by building, manipulating, and sorting words.

Our work!

We have begun to find attributes that can be measured! We have been thinking about length, perimeter, and area! We have been learning how to measure area by covering an outline with same-sized objects! Also, during math workstations we have been estimating and counting sets of objects! We have been recording, organizing, and interepreting numerical information, too! Here's some of our work!

First, you will need 2 balloons, flour, a pencil, and a funnel. Next, you scoop about 5 spoonfuls of flour into the funnel. Then you push the flour into the balloon! Once it is full to your liking, tie it up and push it into a balloon color of your choice. Now you have your very own stress ball!

Today we focused on word families! Like families of people, the words in word families go together. There are two ways the words in a word family go together- they end with the same sounds and they end they end with the same letters. Wee raced the clock and built as many word families as we could!
